Waterways Ireland has received confirmation of planning approval for a development on the Shannon Navigation at Killaloe.

The work will commence in November 2009 and be completed in 2010. The development will consist of repairs to 450m of existing canal wall and the provision of a new walkway along its length, reports afloat.ie. New flow control gates are to be constructed and installed at the northern end of the existing canal extending the life of the canal wall and banks. A pedestrian footbridge will also be incorporated into the gates creating additional access to the walkway.

A new 250m floating mooring including access gangways and services is also planned, and will be installed on the river side of the canal wall. The manufacture of the floating jetties has commenced offsite. They will be installed in November 2009 with the remainder of the work to take place in 2010. The works have been designed and commissioned by Waterways Ireland and will be undertaken by a combination of Waterways Ireland staff and specialist contractors, secured following a tendering procedure.
