3 Launch Award For Clare's Silver Surfers

Official National Broadband Scheme provider, 3 together with Age Action have launched a nationwide search to find Ireland’s most inspirational “Silver Surfers”.

The 3 Silver Surfer Awards 2010 with Age Action  were launched by last year’s winner, 96-year-old Marguerite Faulkner and two of Ireland’s favourite Fair City stars Tom Jordan (Charlie Kelly) and Jim Bartley (Bella Doyle).

3 and Age Action are calling on the people of Clare to nominate either themselves or older people they know who have embraced information technology for pleasure or as a way to enhance their quality of life. They are looking for seniors (over 50 years) who love the Internet, texting on their phone, tweet, blog etc.

Marguerite, who is celebrating her 96th birthday, scooped the title of “Silver Surfer 2009” for her wide use of technology including skyping her seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; surfing the Internet; texting; using her Nintendo DS for ‘brain training’ and completing a digital photography course.

3 and Age Action will make awards in the following categories:
* 3 Silver Surfer Award 2010 with Age Action
* IT Volunteer of the Year (open to all ages)
* Best Use of Internet
* Most Dedicated IT Learner
* Silver Networker

Nomination entry forms can also be found in 3 phone shops nationwide or through the Age Action network of active ageing groups. Closing date for applications is the 29th October and winners will be notified if they have been shortlisted by 2nd November.

The 3 Silver Surfer Awards 2010 with Age Action will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 16th November 2010 in The Gresham Hotel and all of those shortlisted will be invited to attend.  Eamon Ryan, Minister for Communications Energy and Natural Resources will present overall winners with their awards.
