A voluntary animal welfare centre in West Clare has gone to extraordinary measures to remain operational after a hole formed in the roof of the main shelter last week.
Works are already underway to repair the roof at the Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) shelter in Carrigaholt. Shelter owner and SCAR co-founder Shirley McCormack has temporarily relocated the animals to the family home. Among the animals being looked after by Shirley and her family are cats and dogs, and even a goat and pot belly pig.
A fundraising appeal has been set up on the SCAR Facebook page and a coffee morning is scheduled to take place later this month to help plug a hole in the organisation’s finances.
Speaking to The Clare People, Mc. McCormack said: “The roof was badly damaged following torrential downpours last week. We are hoping the repairs to the roof will be completed sometime this week.”
Ms. McCormack pointed out that like all animal rescue centres, the public’s goodwill is key to maintaining the service.
“SCAR is a voluntary group and we depend on donations to continue operating. We would appreciate any assistance or donations that will help us repair the damaged shelter roof. We look forward to returning normal service and continuing our work of securing homes for the many animals that are unwanted or abused.”
“We neuter and vaccinate all cats and dogs that come into our care. We are always happy to hear from anyone who may be able to assist us with our work or indeed donate to the service. We also gratefully accept any cat and dog food donations”, she added.
A fundraising coffee morning will take place in the Clare Inn Hotel on 26 November next from 10am to midday.
