Clare Senior Football Championship Relegation Play-Off And Quarter-Final Review

Sports - Gaelic Games

There were plenty of draws in the Clare Senior football championship last weekend.

Two of the Senior quarter-final games ended in draws while in the senior relegation play-off's both games ended all square.

In the quarter final of the Senior championship Eire Og and Cooraclare played out a 1-10 to 1-10 draw. The game sprung to life in the 26th minute when Brian Lenihan was uppended by Cooraclare keeper Andrew O'Neill. Eoin Glynn took the responsibility for the townies and crashed the ball into the corner of the net to put his side 1-2 to 0-4 up. The final score of the half came from Mark Tubridy when the Cooraclare wing back raced through to level matters, 1-2 to 0-5. Eire Og had the best of the exchanges in the first fifteen minutes of the second half as they raced into a 1-8 to 0-6 lead. However, Cooraclare were not going to go down without a fight and with Joe Considine bossing the midfield they started to get on top. The crucial score came in the 50th minute when John Looney kicked the leather to the back of the net. Shane Daniels and John Looney traded inury time frees to leave the score 1-10 to 1-10. The replay will take place this Saturday in Lissycasey at 4:30 pm. Cooraclare will have Rory Donnelly back in their side this week and they might have the edge over the Ennis side.

Doonbeg saw off the challenge of Shannon Gaels by 0-7 to 0-6 in an exciting game played at Kilmihil last Saturday. The Gaels had the best of the opening thirty minutes and led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the break. Cathal O'Neill, John Paul O'Neill, Barry Toner, Noel Kennedy, Michael Coughlan and Brian Cunninghamwere on the mark for the Gaels with David Tubridy getting the Doonbeg points. Shannon Gaels failed to score in the second half and rue their missed chances. O'Gorman Cup winners, Doonbeg, had scores in the second half from a Shane Killeen, a David Tubridy free and Shane Ryan before up popped super sub Jamie Whelan who sent over the winning score in the 53rd minute. Doonbeg are now back at the semi-final stage again and after last year's disapointment they will hope to make up for it by reaching the county final.

Liscannor and St. Joseph's Doora/Barefield played out a 0-9 to 1-6 draw in the other quarter final. Liscannor led 0-5 to 0-2 at the break with Brian and Kieran Considine sending over a point each and Alan Clohessy firing over two 45's and a free. St. Joseph's had their three scores courtesy of Enda Lyons, David O'Brien and Keith Whelan. Furhter points from Enda Lyons (2) on the restart had the sides level before St. Joseph's were dealt a blow when Damien Kennedy was sent off. Clohessy edged Liscannor ahead only for Enda Lyons to equalise. The game saw another sending off when Alan Flaherty was sent to the line for Liscannor. St. Joseph's seemed to have everything going smoothly for them when Cathal O'Sullivan crashed the ball to the Liscannor net to send his side three points up. However, Liscannor and the Considines had other ideas as two scores from Keiran Considine and an injury time point from Brian Considine ensured that this game would be going to a replay. The replay will take place at 2;30 pm in Kilm l on Sunday with St. Joseph's getting the nod in what should be another tight game.

Elsewhere in the senior B championship, Ennistymon defeated St. Joseph's Miltown by 2-13 to 2-10 to reach their third senior B decider in four years. Kevin Scales and Robbie McDonagh got the Ennistymon goals with Michael Barry and Dessie Molohan getting the St. Joseph's major's. They will play Wolfe Tones in the final after the Shannon men beat Kilrush (3-14 to 2-7). Daniel Gallery and Gary Leahy (2) raised green flags for the Tones. Kilrush had their two goals thanks to Jim Young.

There was also two draws in the senior relegations play-off's. Kilmihil and O'Curry's played out a 0-8 to 0-8 draw. The other game saw Lissycasey and St. Senan's Kilkee play out a 1-6 to 0-9 draw. The evergreen Martin Daly showed he still has class with a well taken goal for Lissycasey.
