Sports - Gaelic Games

Newmarket-on-Fergus ended Kilmaley’s hopes of doing a hatrick of senior camgoie titles with a 2-11 to 0-10 win last Saturday in Cusack Park.

The winners were the better team throughout and deservingly claimed the trophy with the two goals coming from Iris Kaiser, one of four sisters on the victorious side. After the match Ruth Kaiser accepted the trophy on behalf of a jubilant Newmarket team who now go on and contest the semi-final of the Munster Intermediate camogie championship named after former Newmarket player and trainer Kevin “Trixie” Twomey.

In the senior B, Scariff-Ogonnelloe won championship with a 1-7 to 0-7 win over Kilkishen. In what was a tightly contested game the crucial goal came from Scariff’s Mairead Scanlan in the fiftieth minute. Scariff-Ogonnelloe joint captains Sarah Skelly and Megan Bradley-Fitzgerald were presented with the shield after the game.

Kilnamona claimed the Junior camogie championship thanks to a 0-4 to 0-3 victory over Crusheen. The 2006 and 2007 Senior champions had former senior star and captain Catherine O’Loughlin (0-3) along with the Lafferty sisters (Siobhan and Fiona) in their line-up and justified their favouritism against Crusheen who can county themselves unlucky not to have got a draw.

Elsewhere, Killanena won the Junior shield when they beat Kilkishen in the final by 3-7 to 0-4 with team captain Grainne McNamara receiving the shield after the game on behalf of the Killanena team.
