Limerick tennis player Sam Barry has reached the quarter finals of the 46th Astrid Bowl Charleroi, Belgian International Junior Championships.
Having played through qualifying to reach the main draw, Sam this morning defeated Facundo Mena (ARG) 57 61 75 to reach the quarter finals of this Grade 1 ITF event.
Yesterday afternoon, Barry defeated Damir Dzumhur who is ranked 14 in the world. He now faces either Oliver Golding (GBR) or Dimitar Kuzmanov (BUL) in tomorrows quarter final. British Number 1, Golding defeated Sam earlier this year in the second round of the main draw of the Australian Open
John Morrissey, who was also playing this event, was defeated by the Number 1 seed - Jason Kubler (AUS)
Due to his involvement at this stage of the event, Barry has been awarded a Special Exempt into the Main draw of Roland Garros. There will be two Irish names on the junior drawsheet in Paris as John Morrissey is a direct acceptance.
Barry is one of the oldest junior players at the BNP Paribas National Tennis Academy at Dublin City University and is in Belgium with Academy Director Garry Cahill.
