The Labour Party Spokesperson on Tourism, Culture and Sport, Deputy Mary Upton, has called on the IRFU to review its ticket prices and sales arrangements for the Autumn Tests and Six Nations matches at the new Aviva Stadium.
Deputy Upton said: “The latest move by the IRFU to sell tickets for the upcoming matches in two match packages, while an improvement on the previous situation does next to nothing to improve the ability of most sports fans to attend these games.
“The prices being charged by the IRFU remain completely out of touch with the economic conditions being experienced by rugby fans across the country and they need to be reviewed to reflect these circumstances.
“The novelty value of watching our national team in a new stadium combined with the new rugby season made the Autumn Internationals an exciting prospect for all Irish rugby fans. The sales arrangements and ticket prices being charged to attend these games have however threatened to remove the possibility for many people of seeing live international rugby. This would be a great pity given the enjoyment the tremendous Irish success, at international and provincial level of recent years, has brought to fans throughout the country.
“I once again call on the IRFU to review the pricing structure for the upcoming games to take account of the reality of the current economic situation and the need to ensure that people get value for money.”
